Abstract

Pollution control - Legislation in the control of palm oil industrial effluent discharge (watercourse)

The Environment Quality ( Prescribed Premises) (Crude Palm Oil) Regulations 1977 containing the enabling provisions for the stipulation of acceptable conditions of effluent discharge in licences was gazetted on 3 November 1977 arid came into force on 1 July 1978. These acceptable conditions were in the form of a four generation set of effluent standards. Since then, the standards have been revised and the existing palm oil mill effluent (POME) standards for watercourse discharge are shown in Table 1.

Abstract

Energy conservation in the refining industry

The potential to save energy in the palm oil refining industry cannot be ignored. Possible savings of up to 30% of current fuel usage is achievable with successful energy program implementation. It is an objective worth achieving.

Abstract

Maintenance - Predictive maintenance in the palm oil industry : Part I

The current approach in automation of palm oil mills has one inherent weakness : the emphasis is more on process control than overall plant reliability. No matter how sophisticated the process control system adopted, mechanical failures of critical machines bring the plant to a standstill. Predictive maintenance can virtually eliminate unexpected breakdowns, i.e. increases reliability anc1 therefore productivity. Unexpected breakdowns are especially critical during peak months and downtime can result in substantial financial losses. In this series, the authors will discuss their experiences in the introduction of predictive maintenance in palm oil mills based on the Bruel and Kjaer range of equipment. Practical examples will be provided to illustrate various possible applications of predictive maintenance on palm oil mill machinery.

Refining - Refining and fractionation of palm oil : Part III

In Parts I and II, the stages in chemical refining of palm oil were covered. Part III outlines the differences in process flow between chemical refining and the more common physical refining. This part also introduces another important process in the palm oil industry, i.e. fractionation of palm oil.

Abstract

Palm oil as a lubricant

We recently heard of tests which had been carried out jointly by Tsubakimoto Chain Company of Osaka, Japan and Syarikat Union Motor Supply, Kuala Lumpur (local agent for Tsubaki products) on the use of crude palm oil as a lubricant for chains. Although crude palm oil may have limited uses as a lubricant we are giving details fo these tests as they will be of interest to engineers.
